Dobar dan (good day) is neutral and always appropriate. Dobro jutro = good morning. Dobro veče = good evening. Zdravo = hello (neutral). Ćao = hi (informal).
Examples
Dobar dan! (in a shop, bank or clinic)
A neutral, polite greeting
Zdravo! (to a colleague)
A neutral greeting
Ćao! (to a friend)
Informal — only with people you know
Tips
- Ćao means both "hi" and "bye", like the Italian "ciao".
- With strangers use Dobar dan or Zdravo, not Ćao.
