Ti or Vi: formal and informal "you"
Serbian has two words for "you": ti (informal, one person) and vi (formal, or more than one person). When in doubt, use vi — it is never wrong. Switching to ti is usually offered by the older person or the one in the more senior position.
Examples
Kako si?
How are you? (to a friend or acquaintance)
Kako ste?
How are you? (to a stranger or an older person)
Tips
- Colleagues often switch to ti quickly; at the market and in cafés people may use ti straight away.
- Doctors, teachers and officials: always vi.
